Last year marked another great year for solar, with the U.S. solar market adding 10.6 gigawatt of solar photovoltaic (PV). This was the second year in a row the country added double-digit gigawatt PV, according to the new ‘U.S. Solar Market Insight Report 2017 Year-in-Review’ report from GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). The report also included solar capacity by state rankings.
Report highlights include:
- South Carolina jumped nine spots and placed into the top 20 markets for solar power capacity in 2017.
- California continues to lead the pack with 19.8 gigawatts of solar PV capacity (Nearly 5x more than No. 2 North Carolina!)
- Florida returned to the top 10 for the first time since 2011.
- Solar PV capacity growth is spreading beyond the major markets to the Midwest and Southeast. Markets outside the top 10 accounted for 21 percent of total installed capacity last year, up from 16 percent the previous year.
